Helicobacter pylori Antigen Test is a rapid test to detect the presence of the Helicobacter pylori (Hp) antigen in feces, thanks to specific antibodies. These are normally absent in people who have not previously contracted Hp infection.
WHAT IS HELICOBACTER PYLORI?
Helicobacter pylori is a bacteria whose ideal habitat is the human gastric mucosa. The infection is usually asymptomatic, but can sometimes cause gastritis and ulcers in the stomach or duodenal segment of the small intestine. The most common symptoms of these conditions are heartburn or pain in the upper abdomen, especially on an empty stomach or early in the morning, when the stomach is empty. Other associated symptoms include nausea, fullness, reflux, loss of appetite, belching, weight loss, and diarrhea. Sometimes ulcers can bleed and cause anemia for long periods. In the long term, Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. The search for specific Helicobacter pylori antigens in stool is a valid and non-invasive method to quickly identify an infection.
