Description:
1) GREEN TEA (Camelia sinensis)
This plant is rich in polyphenols, among which catechins stand out, the most abundant being epigallocatechingalate (EGCG) with high antioxidant power.
Catechins have proven to be effective as an adjuvant in the treatment of overweight. These molecules appear to bind to macronutrients (especially lipids) in the intestine, causing decreased absorption and, as a result, weight loss.
Thanks to weight loss, beneficial effects are obtained such as the prevention of Diabetes and hyperlipidemia(1).
2) GYMNEMA (Gymnena sylvestris)
The main active constituents, gymnemic acids, are found in the leaf of this plant.
The Gimnema sheet has been shown in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus who are obese or overweight.
In addition to being able to stimulate insulin secretion (in the islets of Langerhans), increase serum insulin levels and promote weight loss.
It prevents the absorption of sugar from the diet by reducing blood glucose levels. This is because the molecular shape of gymnemic acids is similar to that of glucose, competing with it, allowing it to bind to receptors on cells in the lining of the intestine, preventing sugar molecules from binding.
On the other hand, it can inhibit the α-glucosidase enzyme present in the intestinal villi, slowing the digestion of carbohydrates, reducing post-prandial blood glucose levels (2,3)
3) GARCINIA (Garcinia cambogia)
Its active component, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is responsible for the effects of reducing body weight, satiety and inhibition of lipid synthesis. Its action is performed by:
Inhibiting the action of ATP citrate lyase, reducing the synthesis of acetyl-CoA and, consequently, the biosynthesis of triglycerides, cholesterol, phospholipids and free fatty acids.
Reducing food intake.
Increasing the concentration of glycogen in skeletal muscle and other tissues.
Various studies suggest positive results on the effectiveness of Garcinia in the process of weight loss. Furthermore, unlike substances with a stimulant effect, commonly used in slimming products, Garcinia does not act on the central nervous system.
This means that it does not cause insomnia, nervousness, changes in blood pressure or heart rate (4).
4) POLYGONUM Cuspidatum (Resveratrol)
Resveratrol is an active polyphenol present in grapes, wine and the Polygonum cuspidatum plant.
This polyphenol has been shown to have the capacity to inhibit the enzyme α-glucosidase, decreasing post-prandial hyperglycemia with an efficacy similar to that of the oral hypoglycemic agent acarbose.
On the other hand, Resveratrol has also shown that it is capable of activating PGC-1 α, a key regulator of energy metabolism. Once PGC-1α is activated, it induces and coordinates the expression of genes that stimulate oxidative metabolism of mitochondria in brown fat, and multiple aspects of the fasting response of the liver (5).
5) WAKAME SEAWEED (Undaria pinnatifida)
It contains a type of carotenoid called Fucoxanthin, which seems to increase the expression of the uncoupling protein UCP1 in white adipose tissue, which may contribute to the reduction of this fat tissue.
UCP1 is generally expressed only in brown adipose tissue, being a key molecule for metabolic thermogenesis and excess fat accumulation.
Since there is little brown adipose tissue in adults, UCP1 expression in non-brown fat tissues may be favorable for abdominal fat reduction (6).
6) SAFFRON (Crocus sativus)
Saffr'Activ is a standardized extract of saffron stigmas, valued at 3% crocin. Crocins are responsible for increasing serotonin levels, improving mood and relieving compulsive disorders, which is favorable in managing weight control.
To evaluate the effect of Saffr'Activ on appetite loss and weight control, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, pre-clinical study was conducted in 2014, involving 30 people with ages between 25 and 65 years and with weights from 47 to 110 kilos. One group of them received a Saffr'Activ tablet containing 0.8 mg of crocin and the other group received the placebo.
As a result, a 66% reduction in appetite was observed in the group of people who received the tablet with Saffr'activ, while in the placebo group there was no significant loss of appetite. Regarding weight, it was observed that the loss was significant in people who weighed more than 70 kilos (7).
